Art UK Learning Portal

Bringing the nation's art to schools. The design inception for the Learning Portal was coincidentally at the beginning of the 2020 pandemic, as schools were beginning to close. The curation of digital learning materials for students and teachers alike was already an important agenda, but as the pandemic changed the learning landscape, it became clear that the Learning Portal was going to be a pivotal addition to the Art UK website.

The goal of this project was to bring the benefits of learning about art, to everyone. Art UK's innovative learning resources are designed to educate, foster creativity and deliver curriculums across a range of key stages.

  • It was important for the landing page to appeal to students, teachers and parents - showcasing the variety of resources available, without overwhelming - whilst also staying true to the Art UK brand guidelines. The landing page contains a variety of content types and entry points such as news articles, artists, topics, lesson plans and a glossary of art terms. These entry points were designed and organised in a palatable way, showcased within banners, tiles and trending carousels.

  • From the outset, user testing was at the heart of this project. In the early stages of design, an interactive prototype of the Learning Portal was shown to groups of teachers across the UK - to canvas opinions, assess ease of use and explore the relevancy of content types. Our design team compiled a set of reports for the client, summarising our findings and outlining design elements that we would be adjusting based on the feedback we received from teachers.

Resources in the Learning Portal can take many different forms. The key resource types were lesson plans, 3D objects, activities, videos, articles and audio pages. We had to design and develop a page template that was flexible and modular, able to morph and adapt to become any number of things.
